Alec Baldwin’s life has taken many turns over the past 20 years. He’s acted in films, won Emmy awards and been savagely snarked on SNL. But the actor has just incurred his first legal trouble after his wife allegedly accidentally shot himself during an argument at their home.
Alec Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, was on the phone with her boyfriend, Thomas Roberts, talking about their supposed impending divorce, according to TMZ. After a joke, the couple began to argue. Roberts’ brother, Gregory, went outside to intervene and grab a gun. As he was knocking on the couple’s door to tell them to call the police, Alec Baldwin shot himself in the abdomen. Hilaria Baldwin immediately knew what had happened, according to TMZ, saying that “tears were rolling down her face” before rushing her husband to a nearby hospital where he was treated for the wound and released within 24 hours.
Of course, the incident does not seem to have had much to do with his acting, which has had his share of negative press over the years. He has told People magazine that his Hollywood success wasn’t as easy as it sounds, and that a good grounding in the arts can help in the daily fight of celebrity. He cited William Faulkner, the author he called “one of my biggest mentors,” for his ability to avoid the negative side of fame: “I like books, and if I have to buy them I’ll buy them, but I don’t read. Because of books, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t do drugs.”
The actor spoke to the Hollywood Reporter in 2016 about life after his 2014 divorce from Kim Basinger, which followed a 10-year marriage and three children: “If you have something to prove, you’re going to have something to prove. What do you have to lose?”
Like many other public figures, Alec Baldwin has kept a low profile since the shooting. Hilaria Baldwin’s Twitter activity on Saturday was unusually sparse, with just one tweet about the shooting, which read: “This morning Alec was accidentally shot in the abdomen by our yoga instructor, Inés Sastre. Thank God he is fine! Please pray for him and his family!”

As for Baldwin, his Twitter feed isn’t public, so what he has said on social media has been closely guarded. In 2016, when they were separating, Baldwin sent an email to the actress Molly Sims, appearing to accuse his ex-wife of cheating on him and not caring about their children: “The word I keep hearing is ‘caring’. Well, for the love of God, you do not care, do you? I will bet any amount of money that you are a selfish, attention whore who cheats on me and has been for over a decade, and you still make a show of caring for our kids. Why don’t you go back to Paris? Why don’t you go back to being a famous actress who cares and not a crass attention whore who cares only about herself and your career?”
Gossip followers may remember that this kind of predilection for oversharing and for public feuds went against his career when he signed onto SNL, but Baldwin seems to have shrugged it off. Perhaps his new shooting incident might bring him back into the spotlight. Maybe he’ll finally learn to look after himself.
