Younes Schauffele is the American golfer already tipped to take a gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics. But one title he does not own yet is that of Olympic gold medalist.

The 23-year-old was granted entry into the Games this year as a “hometown” athlete but will have to win a competition in Portland, Oregon, in June to compete at the Summer Games in Paris in 2024.

It could be a tough fight if Schauffele goes up against another American golfer, Thomas Pieters, who secured his Olympic spot through the qualifiers with his rival missing out.

Schauffele’s father is dominating Olympic medal history.

Daniel Schauffele, a former Saint Louis University golfer, won the silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics with three straight rounds of 62, matching the record low in a single-round match. He won an amateur silver medal.

He got to 3-under after 13 holes at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics before losing to Se Ri Pak. His son took a very different path to his father.

2024 Olympics: Schauffele is the latest US golfer to make the cut but struggles

Schauffele is currently 28th in the world rankings and his recent performances at the Australian Open in November continued a long run of playing well and failing to win. He’s won two tournaments since turning professional in 2013 and has finished in the top ten of the event six times.

Despite his recent success, Daniel’s aim in winning a medal at the 2020 Games in Tokyo has not changed.

“If I was ever to do this, then win the gold, then it’d be the biggest thing and probably the coolest thing that I’d ever do,” he told CNN in 2016.

And while the Olympic gold medal is still his goal, the shorter term goal is next year’s PGA Tour Championship.

2024 Olympics: Thomas Pieters no longer guaranteed a spot

There’s another father and son duo in the running for gold medals in Paris. French golfers Julien Guerrier and Nicholas Fognini will make their Olympic debuts as a couple.

Guerrier made it through the qualifiers alongside Pieters. Fognini lost in the semi-finals on Sunday.

Guerrier is number two in the French rankings behind Pieters while Fognini is the eighth ranked player in the European Tour rankings. They tied with German Bernhard Langer for the last spot.

The Paris Olympics will see some home Olympic heroes return, including seven-time Olympic silver medalist Gabrielle Anwar and his Belgian wife Lydia Lassila.

Despite Anwar being the first African athlete to compete in the Paris Games, she came second in the 1984 Los Angeles Games behind Eva Pergamon.

Her daughter-in-law will compete in the 400m, 60m and 4x400m relays.

French sprinter Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, an African champion in 2006, will compete in the men’s 100m, 200m and 4x100m relays.

African divers Lagat and Kiprono are competing in the men’s synchronized synchronized 3-meter springboard and women’s 10-meter platform. Lagat also competed in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Kiprono won the Olympic gold medal in 2014 in Rio, beating Canadian Ryan Nelsen.
